IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lavaida (Tucker)
Hall
January 22, 1937 – September 6, 2022
LaVaida Tucker Hall was born on January 22,1937, to Gussie (Sykes) Tucker and John Hardiman in Granada, Mississippi. Gussie married Lee Will "Dad" Tucker and they all moved to Louisville, Mississippi, where Dad Tucker worked at the lumber mill and Gussie opened a café.
LaVaida spent her early childhood years in Louisville, attending school and working in her mother's café. She also met her future husband, Herman Hall, Sr. during this period.
Like many families looking for a better life during the "Great Migration," the Tucker Family moved to East Moline, Illinois in 1951. LaVaida attended and graduated from East Moline United Township High School. She subsequently reconnected with Herman, who also moved to Rock Island upon completion of his military service, looking for work. Herman obviously found more than good work in this town. It was not long before he and LaVaida fell in love and were wed in East Moline. This union bore 5 sons - Herman, Jr., John, Phillip, Ronald, and Bryant. During this time, LaVaida earned her Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education. She applied her education to her position as a Teaching Assistant at Grant Elementary School during most of her sons' formative years. She also served as Den Mother for the local Cub Scouts troop. LaVaida also worked in Production at Caterpillar, Inc. for over a decade.
Upon retirement, LaVaida served as Church Secretary for Greater Antioch Baptist Church under the direction of the late Reverend Lance Chaney for several years. LaVaida also had a heart for service and charity up until the time of her passing. From her involvement with the A.C.T.I.V.E club at the MLK Center, to her donations - large and small - from the Lakota Nation Native
American School to the Fraternal Order of Police. LaVaida also enjoyed league bowling and travel. Her zest for life earned her the nickname, "Big Time" and her hat and purse collection was legendary. In her later years, LaVaida remained active at Second Baptist Church, singng in the church's choir, serving on the Usher Board and supporting a variety of church initiatives.
LaVaida passed away peacefully at Trinity Medical Center in Rock Island on Tuesday September 6, 2022. She was preceded in death by her infant sister, Alfrey, her husband, Herman Sr., and son, Herman Jr.. Along with a host of friends and relatives, LaVaida leaves to mourn her sons John (Tina), Phillip, Ronald, and Bryant, her grandchildren Sherman (Herman, Jr.'s son), Ian (Morgan), and Gabrielle (John and Tina's children), and her great grandchildren Shawn (son of Sherman) and Stoni Soleil (daughter of Ian).
