Obituary

Lawrence "Larry" L. E. Smith, 76, of Coldwater, MS, formerly of Rock Island, IL, passed away at his home in Mississippi on Saturday, March 1, 2025.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Milan.  Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the funeral home on Friday, March 14, 2025 with a masonic service presented by Masonic Lodge Eureka No. 69 at 7:00 pm. Burial will be at Moline Memorial Park Cemetery, Moline.

Larry was born on July 16, 1948, at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, TX, the son of Edmond and Edith (Harrington) Smith.  He married Diane Roberson on September 27, 1969, at Edgewood Baptist Church, Rock Island.  He retired from Eagle Foods Distribution Center in Milan after 30 years of dedicated service.

In addition to his regular employment, he served as a Milan Auxillary police officer and was a member of the Rock River Rangers.

Larry was an entrepreneur. Along with his wife, he owned a successful photography business; D&L Photography was an integral part of local weddings for many years.

Larry was very handy and owned/operated a home improvement contracting business.

Larry was raised in 1980 as a Master Mason in Eureka Lodge #69 in Milan.  During his 45 years of service, he received many accolades and was an active member in multiple lodges. He served the Grand Lodge of Illinois in many capacities. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Moline.

He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hiking, flying airplanes, model trains and traveling and was a dedicated Steam Wheelers fan.

Larry is survived by his wife, Diane Smith, Coldwater, MS; daughter, Laurie (James) Houtz, MS; grandchildren, Zachary Houtz, Prescott Smith, Jacob Houtz, Abigail Smith, and Quintin Smith; great grandchildren, Troy, Casteal, Alyssian, Elaina, Maverick and Ashlyn and bonus great grand, Zoey; siblings, Edmond Smith Jr., Daniel (Thelma) Smith, Jonathan (Jennie) Smith, and Mary Ellen (Christopher) Fox; many nieces and nephews; and his special friend and buddy, Hoggle.  He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Kevin Smith; great grandson, Gunner and sister-in-law, Delores Smith.
