Leo P. Polito, 96, of Rock Island, died Friday, October 3, 2014, at Silver Cross Nursing Center, Rock Island. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will follow on Monday at Rock Island National Cemetery. Those who wish to attend graveside services on Monday may meet at Wheelan- Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island at 8:30 a.m. Memorials may be made in care of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Rock Island.
Leon P. Polito was born on August 23, 1918 in Donaldsonville, LA, a son of Victor Polito and Mary (Bellefore) Polito. He married Rose Cerjan on June 7, 1941 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Davenport, Iowa. Leo worked as a Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor on the Rock Island Arsenal for 37 years. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran who served in Central Europe in WWII. Leo enjoyed spending time with his family, bowling, golfing, fishing, playing cards. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW, Friends Circle and NARF.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 73 years, Rose; daughter, Carol (Ron) Cobert, E. Moline; granddaughters, Cynthia (Doug) DuBree, Moline and Pamela (Gardner) Steele, North Carolina; 3 great-granddaughters, one great grandson and 2 great-great granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Hank and Tony and his sister, Mary Weihler.
