Leona M. Rakus, 88, a resident of Heartland health Care Center, Moline, formerly of Rock Island, died Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at the center.

A memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Leona Mary Duyvejonck was born Oct. 2, 1926 in Rock Island, a daughter of Henry and Alice Holsbeke Duyvejonck. She married John A. Rakus on Nov. 18, 1950 in Rock Island. He died Sept. 29, 2006.

In addition to being a homemaker, in her early years, Leona assisted her parents at the 24th Street Tavern, which they owned.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline, a social sorority and attended the Civil War Roundtable. Leona enjoyed painting, drawing, traveling and doing needlework.

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Lee Ann and Wayne Wille, Davenport, and Jill Rakus, Rock Island; sons and daughter-in-law, Jeff Rakus, Rock Island, and Jay and Melissa Rakus, Bettendorf; grandchildren, Jennifer and Jessica Wells and Eli Rakus; niece, Kay Duyvejonck Whan, Moline; and nephews, Todd (Jana) Duyvejonck, Hawaii, and Jon (Claudia) Duyvejonck, Rock Island. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; daughter, Jo Ann Rakus Wells; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Alois and Mary Jo Duyvejonck and Rene and Betty Duyvejonck.
