IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lionel G.
Bowen
December 16, 1939 – July 31, 2021
Lionel Gwyn Bowen, 81, of Moline, Illinois, died a true Englishman, having placed his cup of tea on the table, and proceeded to fall off his perch. He began his life in London, England, on December 16, 1939, born to Samuel and Elsie Bowen. After 25 years, Lionel moved to Canada where he found employment with John Deere. He retired just 24 years and 6 months later from John Deere Grimbsy, in 1992. He moved to Moline, Illinois, to marry the love of his life, Cynthia. Fighting the odds of their ages, together they had a beautiful baby girl, April Elizabeth Marguerite Bowen.
Lionel kicked off his retired life as a proud stay-at-home father, teaching April about gardening, guitars, and science; he also volunteered in her elementary school classes. He continued his employment at the Two Rivers YMCA, where he worked the Friday night desk. He became a certified Massage Therapist after taking classes at Black Hawk College, and later became certified in CranioSacral Therapy. Through this he made many friends with his teachers, fellow classmates, and clients.
Lionel's ability to work with his hands stayed with him into his final years. Even though he had a triple bypass, he had been gradually getting back to his clients. He continued to work in the garden at his home, finding peace in weeding and harvesting. He also found joy in the kitchen, up until the last day.
Lionel is survived by his wife, Cynthia Searls Bowen; his daughter, April Bowen (Mike McCleary, sons Connor and Jameson), Moline; Paul Bowen (ANNAMETA, son Marcus), Oslo, Norway; his niece, Helga Speck, Bristol, England; Sally Searls, Largo, Florida; Becki Grimes (Bill Grimes), Moline. He also has 4 nephews and nieces: Joe, Josh, Jay, and Jackie.
Lionel was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Colin Bowen.
Per Lionel's wishes, there will not be a funeral. If you wish to honor him in your own space, please plant something for him in your yard.
