Obituary

Lois M. Volrath , age 95, of Bettendorf, Iowa, formerly of Rock Island, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Monday February 7, 2022 at the Iowa Masonic Health Facilities, Bettendorf.

Lois Mae Sommers was born on July 26,1926 in Rock Island, Illinois, the daughter of Elmer and Ethel Mohl Sommers. She married Richard (Dick) W. Reimers on August 18, 1951.  After a long and happy marriage, he preceded her in death on July 4, 1995. She later married George E. Volrath on May 1, 2002, and they were blessed with many happy years together before he preceded her in death on September 8, 2013.

Early in her life, Lois was employed with Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric. However, Lois's true vocation was as a homemaker and caregiver.  She lovingly cared for her mother, Ethel, and her husband, Dick, throughout extended illnesses. No matter what was going on in her life, Lois always had a smile and cheerful words for those around her.  She also loved to create.  She painted, created beautiful needlepoint, cooked, and gardened throughout her life.  She loved collecting interesting antiques and decorating for holidays, and her home was always beautiful and festive.  She was a member of South Park Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, and the King's Daughters philanthropic organization of Rock Island.

Lois was preceded in death by her husbands, Dick and George, her parents, Elmer and Ethel, her step-children Carolyn Reafsnider and Paul, Mary Beth Gruenhagen, and George (Butch) Volrath, her cousins Shirley Myers and Bill, Richard Henneman and Alice, John Henneman, Arlys Ellingsworth, and Frances Langston, and by Suzann Sheley, daughter of John and Patricia Henneman.

Lois is survived by her step-children Peggy Armstrong and David, Mark Volrath and Nancy, Larry Gruenhagen, spouse of Mary Beth, Marge Volrath, spouse of Butch, and many step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and step-great-great-grandchildren as well as by her cousins, Joyce Brittain and Bill, Patricia Henneman, spouse of John, and the children and grandchildren of her cousins, who were very close to her.

Lois embraced joy in her life and shared her inner happiness and love with everyone around her.  She will be dearly missed. Private services will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Iowa Masonic Health Facilities, the American Cancer Society, the American Stroke Association, or South Park Presbyterian Church. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island is assisting the family with arrangements.
