Obituary

Lorian Mae Sundelius Swanson, 90, of Rock Island, drew her last breath at 10:11 p.m. on October 10, 2022, surrounded by family. Services will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Island, at 10:30 am on Monday. Visitation will be from 3 pm to 6 pm, Sunday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Avenue, Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Richard A. and Lorian M. Swanson Diversity Scholarship at Augustana College, or to WVIK-FM Quad Cities Public Radio. Private interment will be in Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island.

Lorian was born February 3, 1932, in Escanaba, Michigan, to a farmer's daughter and a switchman for the Chicago-Northwestern Line. Raised by Caroline and Herbert Sundelius beside Little Bay de Noc, she followed her older brother Harold to Augustana College, where she would serve as president of the Chi Omega Gamma sorority, earn her Golden A in the Women's Athletic Association, and meet a nice Swedish boy from Sycamore, Illinois, named Richard Swanson.

Together Lorian and Swanie raised three sons. He was responsible for spiritual formation, discipline, and first aid; she was in charge of shenanigans. Along the way she worked as a teacher in Moline and Rock Island Schools, played matchmaker for people and homes through Blackhawk Realty, and served on such boards as Breachmenders and the Rock Island Planning Commission.

Those left to carry forward her spirit include her sons, Scott, Craig and Kai, along with the dear daughters they brought into her life, Carmen, Jeanie and Jenni. Her sons' greatest accomplishment was to give her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. While statistically improbable, she knew all of them to be above average, and she adored each and every one. Her brother- and sister-in-law Kent and Barb Swanson also survive her, along with numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom will forever remember Aunt Lor with a smile.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brother, as well as her beloved siblings-in-law Charlene Sundelius, Gerry Swanson and Janice Bowman.

The family wishes to thank the many gifted and caring staff at Silver Cross Skilled Care Center and ProMedica Hospice who took such good care of Lorian and her family during her final months. Online condolences, memories, and expressions of sympathy may be left for the family at wheelanpressly.com.
