Lucille Tarpy, 96, of Rock Island, passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at her daughter's residence.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 am on Monday, February 29, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be from 2 pm to 4 pm on Sunday, February 28, 2016 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, where a rosary will be recited at 1:30 pm. Following burial, a luncheon will be served at Farrell Hall, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Jordan Catholic School or Alleman Catholic High School.
Mary Lucille Rumbolt was born October 27, 1919 in Rock Island, the oldest of four children born to William and Martha Bredar Rumbolt. She graduated from the former St. Joseph's Catholic High School, Rock Island in 1937. She married William B. Tarpy on July 4, 1941 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island. He died December 21, 1981.
Lucille was a member of the Ladies Sodality at the Church, and played an active role in the Church's activities. She held offices in the Alleman Home & School Association, and was publicity chairman of the Auxiliary of the former Franciscan Medical Center. She was also Publicity chairman for the National Secretaries Association.
She worked at Modern Woodmen of America, and Bituminous Casualty Corporation, Rock Island. She was the Administrator's Secretary at the former St. Anthony's Hospital where she worked for twelve years. She held the same position at the former Franciscan Medical Center where she worked for fourteen years and from which she retired in March 1986.
Lucille loved to read, enjoyed music, flower gardening and bridge, and she and her husband enjoyed entertaining. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother, and truly enjoyed her family.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and John Meyers; grandchildren, Terri Murga, Rock Island, Stephanie Belock, Davenport, Mark Meyers, Ozawkie, Kansas, Christopher Meyers, Clinton, Iowa, and Ryan Meyers, Bettendorf; 19 great grand children; 15 great great grandchildren; and sister, Betty Baxter, Rock Island. Her husband; parents; sister, Rose Elaine VanderBeke; brother, Dr. Arnold Rumbolt and two great grandsons, Adam and Benjamin Belock preceded her in death.
