Lyle Rutter was born on May 11th, 1928 to Gladys King and Perry Rutter in Geuda Springs, Kansas. He grew up and attended school in Arkansas City, Kansas. After high school, he attended Cowley County Community College on a basketball scholarship. Lyle continued his education and basketball career at Kansas State University where his team took runner-up in the 1951 National Basketball Championship. Later, Lyle served his country in the Korean War. Lyle married Helen Burk Rutter on December 31st, 1950. They had three sons: Rick, Mike, and Mark Rutter. Lyle spent his adult life as a teacher and a coach. He coached boys basketball at many high schools in Kansas and won several state championships. After devoting many years of his life to high school basketball programs, he began coaching basketball at Neosho Community College and Cowley County Community College. In the years that followed, he became a high school administrator serving several Kansas schools and also served as a superintendent in Herndon, Kansas. In his retirement, he became a widower, later married Darlene Demott Rutter, and settled with her in Rock Island, Illinois. After Darlene's passing, he lived with his son Mike in Cincinnati, Ohio. Lyle was preceded in death by his parents: Gladys and Perry, brothers: Willis, Leo, Oliver, sisters: Maxine and Relma, his wives: Helen Burk Rutter and Darlene Demott Rutter, his son Rick Rutter, and Mike's partner Judy Church. Lyle is survived by his sons Mike and Mark (Pam) Rutter, grandchildren Tyson, Jena, Dereck, and Drew Rutter, Jennifer McDonald, Holly Avalos, many great grandchildren as well as step-daughters Deborah (Bill) Burrus of Moline, IL, Kathryn (Steve) Pauley of Fairfield Glade, TN, Rebecca (Jack) Pagett of Milan, IL, Cynthia (Steve) Frideres of Onalaska, WI, and former daughter-in-law Shirley Rutter. A private family service will be held in Kansas at Tannehill Cemetery. Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with Chaplin Nature Center in Arkansas City, Kansas.
