Margaret Leona Martyn Swain, 84, of Milan, passed away Monday April 6, 2015 at her home.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 10th, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan. Burial will be at Preemption Cemetery, Preemption, IL. Visitation will be 4 pm to 7pm Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Marion B. Fletcher Post 136 American Legion, Monmouth, IL or to Honor Flight of the Quad Cities.
Margaret was born June 21, 1930 in Roseville, IL, a daughter of Mable Gilbert Martyn and Augustus Cooper Martyn. During her early life, she was raised by her mother in the home of her grandparents, Frank and Eva Holeman Gilbert. Following her mother's marriage to Jim Fillman, she moved to Monmouth, IL.
Margaret graduated from Monmouth High School. She attended Western Illinois Teachers College, Macomb, IL, and later graduated from Carthage College, Carthage, IL. Margaret pursued her graduate studies in Special Education at Illinois State University, Normal, IL.
She married William E. Swain on September 6, 1952 in Carthage, IL. They moved to Milan, IL in 1966. He preceded her in death on May 24, 2005.
Margaret taught Elementary and Special Education at Carthage Illinois schools for 10 years. She later taught at Sherrard School District in Coyne Center for 24 years.
She enjoyed genealogy, art, traveling, and most importantly time with her family, grandchildren, and special friends. She will be fondly remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, all of whom will miss her greatly.
Surviving are her sons (and spouses), Tony (Hollie) Swain, Davenport, IA, Terry (Debbie) Swain, and Troy Swain, all of Milan; grandchildren, Theodore Swain, Melissa (Steven) Knepp, Matthew (Marisol) Dean, Jason (Beth) Dean, Chuck Dean, Krista (Mike) Scaia, Amy (Greg) Hagman, Ty (Michelle) Arp; 17 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Don (Kathy) Fillman, Monmouth, Cheri Fillman Stanton, Monmouth; sister-in-law, Anita Fillman; and many nieces, nephews, and other family.
Margaret was preceded in death by her father, mother, stepfather, brother, Joe Fillman, and great-grandson, Hunter Dean.
