Marilou Simpson's Obituary

Marilou Simpson, 98, of Rock Island, passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Friendship Manor - Silver Cross. Marilou was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, whose legacy of love and service will forever be cherished.

Born on March 8, 1928, in Cordova, Illinois, Marilou was the daughter of Everett H. and Alice A. (Fender) Birdsley. In a union filled with love and partnership, she married Donald Simpson on December 27, 1952, in Wyoming, Illinois.

A devoted member of the Edgington Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Marilou was actively involved in the church community, participating in the church choir, volunteering for Vacation Bible School, and being a member of the Presbyterian Mariners. Her commitment to service extended beyond her church, as she proudly spent 20 years as a mission volunteer traveling all over the US and also worked with Habitat for Humanity. She was also a dedicated member of the Friendship Force International of the Quad Cities, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority , and the Home Extension.

Marilou’s passion for music, education and square dancing enriched her life and the lives of those around her. Her 31 years of teaching inspired many children. She leaves a profound impact on everyone who knew her.

Those who survive her and will honor her memory include her cherished daughters, Linda (Syd) DePooter of Milan and Louann (Blaine) Krogman of White River, South Dakota. Marilouise also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Linsy DePooter, Hilary (Evan) Nesheim, Haley Gallant, and Kirby Krogman; as well as her great-grandchildren, Nash, Newt, and Renna Nesheim, and Capri and Kendi Gallant. They, along with countless friends, shall carry her spirit forward in their hearts.

Marilou was preceded in death by her devoted husband, her parents, and her siblings: Mildred Hillard, Harold D. Birdsley, Lawrence A. Birdsley, Arlene Birdsley, and Karen Birdsley.

Memorial services will be Monday, April 13, 2026, at 10:00 am at the Edgington Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 13228 140th St. W., Taylor Ridge.
