Marjorie A. Jones, 84, of Rock Island, passed away Monday, June 29, 2015 at Rock Island Nursing and Rehabilitation, Rock Island.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, where visitation will be two hours prior to services. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Arrangements are entrusted to Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the Sisters of Charity BVM, Dubuque, IA.
Marjorie was born July 9, 1930 in Rock Island, the daughter of Elmer and Zelma (Goethals) Jones. She graduated in the Class of 1948 of St. Joseph High School, Rock Island. Following high school, Marjorie received her B.A. degree from University of St. Francis, Joliet, IL, and later her M.A. degree from University of Iowa, Iowa City.
In earlier years, she was a teacher at the former St. Joseph School, Rock Island. She later was a teacher and counselor for the Rock Island Public Schools for 31 years. She retired in June of 1990.
She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, and previously a longtime member of the former St. Joseph Catholic Church, both of Rock Island. Marjorie had served as president of the St. Joseph Education Committee, president of the St. Joseph/Sacred Heart Parish Council, and as Lector, Sacristan, and member of the St. Joseph Funeral Choir and Altar and Rosary Society.
Marjorie was also a member of the National Education Association, and Black Hawk Chapter of Illinois Retired Teachers.
She is survived by her dearest friends, Joan Grothusen and family, and Kathy Papageorgiou and family.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.
