Marjorie R. Mayes, 90, of Rock Island, passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at Silver Cross Nursing Center, Rock Island. Services will be 11 am, Monday at St. James Lutheran Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to NAMI of Illinois or to St. James Lutheran Church, Rock Island. Private inurnment will be Tuesday at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island is assisting the family.

Marjorie was born on April 9, 1924 in Cambridge, Illinois, a daughter of John Avery Reed and Ruth McIntosh Reed. She married Lester Mayes on June 17, 1948 in Cambridge. He preceded her in death on October 3, 2006. Marjorie was a school teacher and had worked for several years in the Moline School District.

She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Rock Island.

She served as president of Church Women United. She was also a member of WELCA, and a charter member of NAMI of Rock Island and Mercer Counties.

Marjorie enjoyed playing the piano and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her children, Ruth (Mark) Paunicka, Champaign, Diana Mayes, Rock Island, Paul (Ann) Mayes, Muscatine, Marvin Mayes, Peoria and Larry (Michel) Mayes, Andalusia; grandchildren, Becky Lahart, Nathan Mayes, Rachel Kroeger, Elizabeth Paunicka, Christina Paunicka and Catherine Mayes; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Marie Nelson, Cambridge and Russell (Carol) Reed, Cambridge.
