Obituary

Martha “Marty” Jo Finnie died peacefully at her home with her family on Sunday, April 12, 2026. Marty was born at St Anthony’s hospital in Rock Island on May 10, 1954 to the late Clara (DePoorter) and Bernard Roach. One of a dozen children to Clara, Marty and her many siblings attended St Joseph’s Catholic School in Rock Island. When Marty grew up, she worked at RI Meats in Rock Island as a butcher and then a homemaker, room mom, and finally an active grandmother.

Marty married the late Richard “Rick” Otto Finnie on February 13, 1981. She leaves behind a daughter, Nichole Lauren (David) Parker, grandsons Shawn William and Oliver Emmett Parker, all of Rock Island, Illinois, as well as siblings Patrick Roach, Mary Evans, Bernard Roach, John Roach, and Rita Schmidt. Preceding Marty in death was her husband Rick, Stepson Shawn Michael, parents Clara Jackson and Bernard Roach, and siblings Colleen White, Sara Milton, Robert Roach, Lori Schmacht, Timmy Roach, and Michelle Jackson.

Marty was a woman of many hobbies. She loved painting ceramics, baking, cooking, and had a sweet tooth that only her beloved Valomilks, Milkyway candy bars, or vanilla ice with cherries could sate. Her chocolate chip cookies, taco meat, and brown bread were legendary in Rock Island! When she wasn’t in the kitchen, she was usually tending for one of her pets. She loved her late dogs, including Ginger, Chloe, and Cocoa, as well as her late cats, Jade, Toby, Bella, Charlie, Riley, Jake, Gretta, Pipa, Sophie, Ella, and Max. Marty always had a small retinue of cats following her around, hoping for her to brush them, nuzzle them, or give them a snack and many of them will mourn her passing deeply. Finally, Marty was an avid cinephile and loved rewatching Netflix and every monster movie she could find.

Marty was a devoted grandmother. Whether it was eating crackers with her grandsons, rewatching Bluey for the 10th time, or demanding that she buy the loudest toys for her grandsons, Marty was happiest with her family. Marty loved oversized chairs because she could sit in them with at least one grandson napping beside her as they watched cartoons in the afternoon. Recovering from an earlier respiratory illness, one of her grandsons, a child barely able to string three words together, grasped her leg tightly and said “Please don’t go. I need you”.

A viewing is scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory in Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that mourners spend time with their families, bake cookies, or donate to the Quad Cities Animal Welfare Center. Finally, the family would like to thank UnityPoint Hospice, specifically the nurse Alyssa and aide Emily, for the care and support they provided over the last 11 months.
