Marvin Neely, 89, of Rock Island, died Sunday, August 22, 2021 at home. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, August 30, 2021 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be in Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. The family requests those in attendance to wear a face mask or covering. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Lewy Body Dementia Association.
Marvin was born on September 5, 1931 in DeKalb, Mississippi to Clay and Ina (Holton) Neely. He joined church at an early age at Center Ridge Baptist Church and graduated from Whisenton High School. Marvin honorably served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He married Louise Watkins on July 23, 1955. Marvin worked at the Rock Island Arsenal for 38 years and enjoyed many years of league bowling at Town & Country. He was a member of Second Baptist Church in Rock Island where he was an usher. Marvin was also a long-time member of the Elks and Lions Clubs. Throughout his retirement years he loved playing golf, watching his stories such as Y&R, and he loved cheering on his favorite sports teams, especially the Chicago Cubs and Bears. Most of all, Marvin loved his family. He loved to laugh, joke, tell stories, and celebrate his family's accomplishments.
Survivors include his wife, Louise; children, Willie Neely (Cyntra), Marvin Neely (Judy), Lynette Neely-McDuffy (Donnie), Lanolia Neely, and James Neely (Bridget); grandchildren, Tonia Williams-Neely (Teonta), Tosha Neely-Obleton (Ishmael), Tonette, Marvin (Jasmine), Christopher, Jeremy, James, Malcolm, Julian, and Jaden Neely, Monica Sanders, Shaylan McDuffy, and Julia Garrison; 13 great grandchildren; siblings, Jimmie, Lanolia, Edward; and loving pet, Bo.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Ella, Mary, Henry Clay, James, Benjamin, and Charlie.
