Mary L. DeSmet, 73, of Illinois City, formerly of Rock Island, passed away Sunday May 11, 2014 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.A Memorial Service will be 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 3rd, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan, with visitation from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3rd. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Mary Louise Martens was born April 5, 1941 in Rock Island, a daughter of Felix and Helen Schaaf Martens. She graduated from Alleman High School, Rock Island. Mary and Peter L. DeSmet were united in marriage on September 26, 1959 in Rock Island.

She was employed for many years at Servus Rubber, Rock Island. Mary was also a talented artist .

Surviving are her husband, Peter, of Illinois City; brother, Johnny Martens; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Kathy Martens, Illinois, Dixie Martens, Florida, Tony DeSmet, Broken Bow, OK, Don DeSmet, Kansas City, KS, and Sharon Dusenberry, Rock Island; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Jim, Ronnie, and Joe Martens, and her sister, Doris Hayes.
