Mary L. McKinnon, 83 of Davenport, formerly of Rock Island, passed away Saturday, October 4, 2014 at Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street, Davenport. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m Saturday at Gospel Mission Temple, 5074 N. Pine St. Davenport, IA. Bishop Jimmie R. Horton will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Private burial will follow on Tuesday, October 14 at Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.
Mary Lee Taylor was born on June 2, 1931, a daughter of Tom and Eddie Belle (McDowell) Taylor. She married Johnnie C. McKinnon on January 21, 1954 in Greenville, Ala. Mary worked at Servus rubber, Ralston Purina and most recently as a Teacher's Aide at Hawthorne School, Rock Island.
Mary was a very prominent figure in her community and at church, she spent her extra time providing spiritual guidance to others in her church family. She was widely known as the Mother of Gospel Mission Church along with being the Matriarch of 5 generations. Mary was also a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1303.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Johnnie, Sr.; children, Beverly Hall, Mae (Pete) Mickeal and Mary Nelson of Rock Island, Diane Herrod, Tina Johnson, Anita Sickler and Johnnie, Jr., of Davenport; 13 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 37 great-great grandchildren; Special son and daughter, Bishop Jimmie R. and Lady Mother Michelle Horton; sisters, Viola Jenkins, Tex., Ruby Miles, Edie (Rudy) Hall, Annette Pernell of Rock Island and Betty Ash, Davenport; sisters in law, Willie Jean Wells, Tracy Taylor and Florence Brown, along with host of goddaughters and godsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 4 sisters and 5 brothers.
