Mary Jane Christian, 92, of Rock Island, formerly of Pennsylvania and Florida, passed away Thursday, January 3, 2019 at home with family. Services will be private at Merritt Funeral Home in Brooksville, Fla. Burial will be at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla. Memorials in care of Two Rivers United Methodist Church, Rock Island or Mary's home church, Newportville Community Church, 4001 Newportville Rd., Newportville, Penn. 19056.
Mary was born in Philadelphia, Penn. on May 16, 1926, the daughter of Frederick Gotlieb and Mary Cameron Wimmersberger. She married John A. Christian on July 24, 1965 in Newportville, Penn.
Mary worked as a secretary for various companies over the years and retired from ETS in Princeton, New Jersey.
She was a member of Two Rivers United Methodist Church. She enjoyed volunteering her time at the Project Now Senior Center as well as the Saturday meal site at Two Rivers United Methodist Church, both of Rock Island.
Mary was passionate about music. She sang in church choirs throughout Pennsylvania and Florida as well as the Delaware Valley Philharmonic Orchestra in Pennsylvania. Her talents went beyond singing, with only three months of piano lessons, Mary could play anything she picked up and it sounded wonderful. Along with music, Mary's greatest love was her family. She was such a charismatic person who never knew a stranger.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Ruth Hill, Rock Island, Ill.; grandchildren, Megan (Dan) Marcus, Orland Park, Ill. and Adam (Sarah) Hill, Walcott, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Evan and Abigail Marcus and Henry and Hannah Hill; and stepchildren, Sherry Smith and John Christian.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, Fritz and William Wimmersberger, sister-in-law, Evelyn Wimmersberger and son-in-law, James Hill.
