Mercedes A. White, 85, of Silvis, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2023 at home. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, May 8, 2023 at Rock Island Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made in care of Beacon of Hope Hospice. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mercedes was born on December 4, 1937 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, a daughter of Francis C. and Anna M. (Fedie) Stai. She graduated from Rock Island High School and from Whan's Beauty School. Mercedes married Dale Selhost in 1955. They later divorced. She married Dr. Philip J. White on November 28, 1964. They spent their weekends camping in Maine for 45 years. She worked as a geriatric hairdresser for over 50 years.
Her hobbies included quilting, playing cards with her sisters and family, and spending time with her great grandchildren. She volunteered with Beacon of Hope Hospice. Mercedes was an active member of Redemption Rock Church, Westminster for many years and most recently, River City Church, Moline.
Those left to cherish Mercede's memory include her children, Terri Favela, Silvis, IL Michael (Joan) Selhost, Moline, IL, Philip White, Jr., Columbus, MS, Dr. Paul (Wendy) White, Milford, DE and Dr. Prescott (Sharon) White, Leominster, MA; Honorary son, Doug Selhost; grandchildren: Jenna, Nicholas, Adan, Raul, Jennifer, Jacqulyn, Timothy, Anthony, Benjamin, and Katherine; great grandchildren, Michael, Izabel, Elizabeth, Audrey, Mason, Jaxson, Lily and Landon; siblings, Lorraine Smith, Alabama, Janice Rowe, Rock Island, IL, Sandra Roberts, Davenport, IA, and Juanita (Harold) Merritt, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
Mercedes was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and siblings, Beatrice Whitcomb and William Stai.
