A memorial visitation will be held from 4 pm to 7 pm on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at Wheelan- Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island.  Private burial will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island.   Memorials may be made to the family.

Michael was born on July 15, 1952 in Peoria, the son of Lester and Ruth (McKinney) Smith.  He married Laura Rothweiler on June 21, 1978 in Rock Island.  Michael worked at Genesis Hospital as a HVAC Technician.  He was a proud veteran of the US Navy, serving from 1971-1976.  He loved fishing, camping, and spending time with his family and dogs.  He was a pyrotechnician and past member of Pyrotechnics Guild International and Iowa Pyrotechnics Association, and set up firework shows around our local area.

Michael was a stain glass artist connoisseur, and was the creator of the "window wowser."  He and Laura owners of "Got Glass?" were known throughout the craft community for their butterfly, screen bug (spiders and frog) creations.  Michael also made beautiful glass beads and patio pavers with embedded stain glass designs.  Michael was always eager to share his love of stain glass with others by teaching classes in his shop.

Michael is survived by his wife of 38 1/2 years, Laura Smith; parents, Lester and Ruth Smith; brothers, Pat Smith and Terry (Deanna) Smith; sister, Toni (Tim) Gibbons; brother-in-laws, Mike (Irene) Rothweiler and Mark (Deb) Rothweiler; sister-in-law, Michele (Robert) Shipp; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
