Nelvin H. "Whitey" Wistedt, 80, of Rock Island, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017 at St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center, Rock Island.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7 Ave., Rock Island.  Visitation is 3 to 6 pm Friday at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rock Island High School Athletic Dept.

Nelvin was born Jan. 6, 1937 in Rock Island, a son of Einar and Elizabeth Zimmerman Wistedt.  He married Judy Thompson Hillyer on Dec. 5, 1970 in Rock Island.

He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1955 and attended Western Illinois University.  Whitey retired from the John Deere Parts Distribution Center, Milan.  He previously worked in the sales department of Kraft Foods.

Whitey served in the U.S. Army Reserves.  He attended The Heritage Church, Rock Island, where he served as a greeter.  He was a two term past president of the Golden K Kiwanis Club of Rock Island and received the Hixson Award from Kiwanis International.  Whitey had a great passion for Rock Island youth sports, serving as an umpire for Rock Island Girls Softball and serving as the supervisor of the RIMBA Youth Basketball program in Rock Island.  He rarely missed a high school sporting event.

Survivors include his wife, Judy; children, Erik Wistedt, Rock Island, Teri Hillyer, Silvis, Stephanie Hillyer-DeWitte (Chad DeWitte) Rock Island, Rich Hillyer, Moline, and Chris (Dawn) Hillyer, Fort Wayne, Ind.; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his sister, Rhoda (Bob) Humphrey, Rock Island.  He was preceded in death by his parents.
