Obituary

Ollie "Ozzie" Ray Phelps, 91, of Rock Island, died Friday, September 2, 2022 at his home surrounded by family.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 am Thursday, September 8, 2022 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Milan.  A rosary will be recited at 3:30 pm Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Milan, followed by visitation from 4-6 pm.  Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented.  Memorials in care of the Alleman High School Booster Club.

Ollie was born in Davenport, Iowa on November 16, 1930, a son of Ollie and Mary Elizabeth Purvis Phelps.  He was a U.S. Army and a U.S. Navy veteran.  Ollie married Shirley Love with whom they had one daughter together, Debra.  Shirley preceded him in death.  He married Ellen Clayton on June 30, 1967 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Milan.

Ollie worked as a supervisor for 30 years at Eagle Foods in Milan.  In retirement, Ollie dedicated the next 20 years taking care of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Milan, where he was also a member.  He spent time serving in many capacities at the church.

Ollie was also a proud advocate and supporter of the Alleman High School Booster Club.  He attended as many football games as he could with his friends.  He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 55 years, Ellen Phelps, Rock Island; daughters, Debra (Rusty) Mortz, Rock Island, Kathie Holt, Punta Gorda, Fla., Tina (Paul) Maas, Illinois City, Sandra Hollon, Milan and Kellie (Charlie) Erritt, Osprey, Fla.; grandchildren, Stephanie Carey, Kiel and Dan Mortz, Brad and Kari Johnson, Desiree Samples, Billy Enlow, Erek Pittman, Jeannie and Levi Kokos, Mike and Shayleen Hollon, Aaron and Zachary Carlin and Bella Erritt; 30 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and brothers, Lloyd (Laura) Phelps and Larry (LaNelle) Phelps, both of Jefferson, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Shirley, daughter, Linda Johnson, Grandson, "Little" Maynard Johnson, two brothers, Robert and Melford Phelps, an infant sister and sons-in-law, Kelly Hollon and Scott Holt.
