Peggy A. Powell, 85, of Milan, passed away Monday November 20, 2023 at Silver Cross Health and Rehabilitation, Rock Island.
Services will be 10:00am Wednesday November 29, 2023 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00pm Tuesday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 201 E. 4th Avenue, Milan. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be left to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island or St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Milan.
Peggy was born on December 24, 1937 in Beardstown, Illinois, the daughter of James and Helen (Benear) Powell.
She had retired as a principal from the Rock Island School District as principal at Frances Willard Elementary School. Previously she had taught at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School. Her teaching career began in Galesburg, Illinois after graduating with her Master's degree from Knox College, she then served 2 years as a missionary teacher in Thailand before returning to Rock Island.
Peggy loved traveling with her life partner Sonia Ribeiro, playing golf, volunteering with dog therapy at local hospitals with her dog Maxx and participating in American Kennel Club Agility Events where Maxx had been crowned Champion.
Peggy was a devoted member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Milan and later at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island, Alumni of Knox College and served as a volunteer with several local groups.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews; several great nieces and nephews, including, Jamie Powell, Rock Island; numerous great-great nieces and nephews, including Samantha Powell, Hawaii; brother and sister in law, David and Boni Powell, Atlanta, Georgia.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Helen; Life Partner, Sonia; and brother, John Powell.
