Philip E. Thompson, 83, of Rock Island, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017 at Select Specialty Hospital, Davenport.
The funeral service will be 11 am on Tuesday at First Church of the Nazarene, Rock Island. Burial is at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented by Moline American Legion Post 246. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to First Church of the Nazarene or to Morning Star Academy, Davenport.
Philip was born Aug. 4, 1933 in Louisville, KY, a son of Robert E. and Thelma L. Drake Thompson. He married Leona Calhoun Sebben Sheets on Jan. 5, 2013 in Rock Island.
He worked for nearly 55 years as a truck driver for Hesco Parts Corp. in Louisville.
Philip served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953 to 1956. He attended First Church of the Nazarene. He was very community service minded, delivering food for the food pantry at Grace Fellowship Church, Moline. Philip was a kind man who was anxious to help anyone in need. He loved being on the river and enjoyed boating and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Leona E. Thompson; son, Philip E. Thompson Jr.; stepchildren, Michelle Beckwith, Pamela Norton, Susan Taylor, Todd Sebben and Kyle Sebben; grandsons, Larry and Cole; and many step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; sisters, Myrtle Powel, Frances Perry, Elizabeth Drechsel, and Freida Petty; brothers, Robert and George Thompson; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Gilda; son, John "Tommy"; sisters, Alma Kidder, Mary Braden, and Doris Brock; brother, Pete; and two former wives.
