Obituary

Ralph F. Coomes, 98, Moline, IL passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at his home. There will be a visitation from 4-7:00 PM on Thursday, February 8, 2024 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Milan. The visitation is casual, please wear Chicago Cubs apparel or one of the "other" guys. The funeral will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 9, 2024 at the funeral home. Burial at Preemption Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.

Ralph was born on July 7, 1925 in Evansville, IN, the youngest son of John and Fannie (Ridenour) Coomes. He graduated from Bosse High School in Evansville in 1946 after serving in the US Army from 1943 to 1945 as a PFC. This included a tour to the European Theatre during WWII with company B Tank Battalion. He was very proud to go on the Honor Flight in 2010.

On June 21, 1948 Ralph was united in marriage to Lucille Lawson in Litchfield, IL, she preceded him in death in 2005.

Ralph worked in retail for Newberry's, Goodyear, and traveling sales for Progress Lighting. He started working with his son-in-law, Craig Askam in 1992 at Reflex Fitness Products in Orion, then Milan. He did assembly, shipping, and whatever was needed to get the orders out. He retired in 2013 at the age of 87.

Ralph was a member of Grace Bible Fellowship, VFW Post 2153, and Friends Circle Club, Moline.

He was the #1 Cubs fan, they made his lifelong dream when they won the World Series in 2016. It took a long time for his smile to fade. . .he was looking forward to the start of the season.

He is survived by his children, Diane (Craig) Askam and Dave (Elaine) Coomes; grandchildren, George (Chanda) Woods, Chris (Mark) Wilson, Heather (Mark) Johnson, Jody (Steven) Kern, Tim (Jodie) Askam, Kim (Ryan) Woodward, Kyle (Laura Poffenbarger James) Coomes; great-grandchildren, Brenon Wilson, Alex and Jacob Kern, Garret Johnson, Henry, Lucy and Owen Woodward, Taylor (Trevor) O'Neill, Chelsey (Mike) Krocza, Kendal Gruman, and Julia and Jarod DePriest; great-great-grandchildren, Reid and Dane Krocza, Olivia and Jackson O'Neill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 57 years, Lucille; daughter, Karen Woods; grandson, Steven Woods; and great-grandson, Nathan Woods.
