Raymond William Dasso, M.D., 91, of Rock Island, passed away on Sept. 11, 2016 at UnityPoint-Trinity, Rock Island.
Funeral services will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, at 11 a.m., Friday. Burial will be at Calvary cemetery. Visitation will be Friday at 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Memorials may be left to St. Pius Church or Honor Flight of the Quad Cities.
Ray was born at home in Rock Island, IL on Sept 29, 1924 as the seventh child of Henry J and Frances Schweickert Dasso. He graduated in 1942, from Rock Island Senior High School as Salutatorian of his high school graduating class. From there he went to the University of Illinois for his degree in pre-medical studies. While studying at the University of Illinois, Ray joined the Navy V-12 program that required he attend school all year round. As a consequence, he obtained his B.S. at 21 and M.D. at 22. While in pre-med he wrestled for the University of Illinois. After graduating from the University of Illinois he went on to study at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. During his years in medical school, World War II ended and Ray was discharged from the Navy. He went on to complete an internship in Peoria, a residency in general surgery at DePaul Hospital in St Louis, and residencies in orthopedic surgery at General Hospital in Charleston, WV and St Vincent's Hospital in Toledo, OH. Ray re-enlisted in the Navy during the Korean War in which he served one year at Port Hueneme, CA and one year at Subic Bay in the Philippine Islands.
On May 29, 1951 Ray married Carolyn Gatlin at the St Ignatius Catholic Church in Phoenix, AZ. Four children were born to the couple. He practiced medicine with Medical Associates in Dubuque, IA in 1955-56, after which he opened his own practice in Rock Island, IL which he maintained until his retirement in 1989.
Ray was a member of the Rock Island County, Illinois State, and American Medical Associations. Also, he was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the International College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. Other organizations included American Legion, VFW, Legion of Mary (President, Rock Island Chapter), The Knights of Columbus, German-American Heritage Center, Davenport, IA.
Ray enjoyed spending time with his family, especially at their lake home in northwest Illinois. He was a devout Catholic and attended mass daily. Ray kept up on national and international affairs, read the bible and other religious books and enjoyed watching football.
Ray is survived by his children, Mitzie Nicholson, Iowa City, IA; Kim (Mike) Voss, Rock Island; Alice (Paul) Conwell, Rock Island; Phillip Dasso, Madison, WI; three grandchildren, Selena Dasso, Rock Island, Tonya (Jaime) Rea, Rock Island; Christopher Conwell, Rock Island; ten great-grandchildren, his brother Jerome, Sun City, TX and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Carl, Eugene, Vincent, Robert, Leo and sisters Elizabeth, Lucille and Beatrice.
