Richard N. "Brownie" Brown, 82, of Rock Island, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014 at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.
Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island. Burial is at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented Moline American Legion Post 246. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Quad City Animal Welfare Center, Milan.
Richard Neil Brown was born Dec. 18, 1931 in Princeton, Ill., a son of Marion and Mildred Brandt Brown. He married Louise Cassini on May 19, 1956 in Rock Island. He later married JoAnne Carlson McEwen on Oct. 10, 1987 in Rock Island.
He served 23 years with the Rock Island Fire Department and was a Captain at the time of his retirement. Brownie also worked 50 years as a tile layer.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. Brownie was a member of the Rock Island Retired Firefighter's Association and Ducks Unlimited. He coached in the Rock Island Girls Softball program for several years. Brownie enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and playing cards.
Survivors include his wife, JoAnne; daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Jim Digman, Davenport, Gina and Shawn Wales, Whetstone, Ariz., and Shana and Dan Knittle, Rock Island; stepchildren, Diana (Brian) Johnson, Rockford, Ill., and Sheila (Dean) Thompson, Hastings, Neb.; grandchildren, Danielle (Jeremy), Rachel, Evan (Dani), Nicholas (Nhu), Samantha and Mikayla; step-grandchildren, Brittany, Brooke (Josh), Bethany, Johnathan, Erica, Kaela, Jessica, Louis, Maureen and Thomas; six great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; brother, Jack (Barb) Brown, Gainesville, Fla.; niece, Meredith; nephew, David; and his beloved dog, Spotty. He was preceded in death by his parents.
