Richard E. Coon, 76, of Muscatine, Iowa, passed away December 14, 2023, at St. Anthony's Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rock Island, Illinois. Richard (Rick) was born on August 6, 1947, in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of John R. Coon and Vera M. Johnstone. He married Charlene Larkins in Galesburg, Illinois on June 22, 1968. Rick is survived by his daughter, Carrie Short of Oskaloosa, IA; grandson, Jacob Miller of Chicago, IL; and three sisters, Linda Thiessen of Muscatine, IA; Michelle McKune of Phoenix, AZ; Valerie (Richard) Robertson of Phoenix, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Diana Coon. Rick attended Columbus Community High where he and his friends Harold Johnson and Jim Forbes were always up to something ornery and had continued their ornery shenanigans into their late adulthood. Most folks around Louisa County met Rick when he pulled them over for one reason or another when he started working for the Louisa County Sheriff's Department. He worked his way up to Lieutenant Deputy and became a state firearms instructor for the state of Iowa. In his free time, you would find Rick tinkering in his garage on his cars, boats, and whatever else he found interesting. He enjoyed going to car shows and cruise nights around Iowa and Illinois, winning best in show almost every place he attended. When not working on his cars, he enjoyed fishing and diving in the local quarry, hunting and taking his family and friends to the local shooting range. He loved his daughter and grandson unconditionally and will be deeply missed. Services are pending until after the holiday season with his final resting place at Columbus City Cemetery with his family.
