Richard “Dick” Eagle was born in Galesburg, Illinois on July 17, 1935, the only child of Florine (Marshall) Eagle and Richard Andrew Eagle. He passed away on Monday, May 4, 2026.

Dick moved to Rock Island as a youngster. He attended local schools where he participated in football and basketball and was proud to be a member of the Augustana Vikings football team. He continued his education at the University of Oklahoma where he earned his degree.

He had a long career as a civilian at the Rock Island Arsenal where he made many friends. After retirement, he continued to enjoy spending time with them through golfing, playing cards, bowling, and joining his breakfast buddies for Chicago Cubs conversation and Illinois/Iowa debates.

Dick was a longtime boys and girls basketball coach in both the Illinois (Washington Jr. High) and Iowa (Davenport Central) Quad City area. For many years he was a coach and volunteer with the Davenport Lady D’s basketball team where he was known as Coach Grandpa. It was a “job” which gave him so much enjoyment. He looked forward to sharing some basketball tips, hosting pizza parties, and having fun with the team.

During a family meeting to discuss a way to honor his son Tim who died at age 38 of melanoma and to offer support for melanoma research he suggested a golf outing. It proved to be a great idea-The Tim Eagle Memorial Golf Outing, which began in 2003 and ended in 2025. Contributions to melanoma research during that time totaled over $250,000.

In lieu of flowers, the family will accept monetary donations which will be contributed to the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center and Dr. Albertini to assist in the support of melanoma research on his behalf.

Dick is survived by his son, Tom (Jennifer) Eagle; daughter, Jennifer (Mike) Long; daughter-in-law, Kathy Eagle, and their families; grandchildren, Evan (Audrey) Eagle, Alyson Eagle, Lyndsey Eagle, and Andrew Eagle; and great-grandchildren, Aspen Grace Eagle and Archer Timothy Eagle.

A memorial visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2026, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Avenue, Rock Island, Illinois. Online condolences may be shared at www.wheelanpressly.com.
