Richard "Dick" F. McCleary, age 87, of Rock Island, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, August 10, 2025. In accordance with his wishes, cremation rites have been honored. A private graveside service will be at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented by the Milan American Legion Post 569. The family will host a celebration of life at the Milan American Legion on Saturday, August 16, 2025, from 1-5 pm. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Dick to the Milan American Legion Post 569. Dick was born on August 31, 1937, in Muscatine, Iowa, to the loving union of Beurdett and Leona Beckman McCleary. A proud U.S. Army veteran, he served valiantly with the 82nd Airborne, completing nineteen parachute jumps during his distinguished service. On October 21, 1955, Dick married the love of his life, Ramona Dahnke, who preceded him in death on October 11, 2007. Together, they shared countless cherished moments, creating a legacy of love that will continue through their family. A dedicated member of the Milan American Legion Post 569, Dick passionately contributed to his community as a manager and umpire for Rock Island Legion Baseball, as well as a coach for Milan Little League, where he inspired many young athletes. Dick leaves behind a loving family who will carry forward his memory: his son, Patrick (Kim) McCleary of Bowling Green, KY; his grandchildren, Denver (Natalie) Schmitt, Dalton (Lindsey) McCleary, and Drake (Brianne Giambagno)McCleary; and his great-grandchildren, Mason, Avery, Ella, and Eliana. He is also survived by his brother, Terry McCleary, and his special companion, Maureen Herbert. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, his parents, and his daughter, Candy Schmitt, as well as his brother, Gary McCleary.
