Richard R. Syler, 75, of Rock Island, passed away Friday, September 20, 2024, at St. Anthony's Nursing and Rehabilitation, Rock Island, Illinois.
Funeral services will be held at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Avenue, Rock Island. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to King's Harvest Pet Rescue No Kill Shelter.
Richard was born October 16, 1948, in Oelwein, Iowa, to Charles and Elizabeth (Roberts) Syler. He attended Oelwein High School and then enlisted in the U.S. Army. Richard was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army. He married Patricia Strupp-Mueller, and she preceded him in death on April 13, 2003. He later married Edith Killingsworth and she preceded him in death. Richard worked for the U.S. Postal Service for over 25 years and also Garber Supply Co. for a number of years before retiring. He was a member of the Rock Island Moose Lodge and an avid bowler with the Sunday Strikers. Richard enjoyed golfing, playing the harmonica, animals, playing pool, watching western movies, music, and listening to the Dick Clark show. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Those left to cherish Richard's memory include his children, Steve (Angie) Syler, Mike (Kristy) Syler, and Michelle Mendoza; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; wives; siblings, Frank James, Melvin James, Merle James, Betty Borchman, Mary Cox, Vickie Resler, and Pat Dibble; and children, Beth Smith and Scott Syler.
