Dick Klauer, aged 90, passed away on Friday, August 19, 2022. He was born October 29, 1931. He married his high school sweetheart Irene G. Nelson of Rock Island in 1951. Dick was an accomplished Rock Island H.S. athlete, playing defensive tackle on the 1949 undefeated State Champion Rock Island H.S. football team and was appointed by coach Shorty Almquist to Track Captain winning numerous first place finishes in low and high hurdles in meets throughout Illinois and Iowa. He was proud of his U.S. Army service in Korea, serving as a construction foreman helping to improve camp facilities for U.S. servicemembers and Korean refugees. Dick worked throughout the QC area as a carpenter/foreman for Christenson Homes and McDermott Construction among others. In retirement, he could identify a home he had built on almost every QC block. Dick's hobbies included bowling, fishing, and volunteering at Pine Mill at Muscatine's Wild Cat Den Park with his brother Clarence. He was a member of Saint Mary's Church in Rock Island for most of his life and often sang in the choir. He was preceded in death by parents Vincent & Toni, brothers Vince, Arnold, Bernard, and Bill, sisters Theresa and Janet, and beloved wife Irene. He is survived by brothers Clarence, David, sister Cecelia, daughter Ruth C. Klauer of Moline, son Richard 'Ted' Klauer of Minneapolis, and grandchildren Sarah Klauer of El Cerrito, CA (husband Marc Shinn-Krantz) and Neal Klauer of Baltimore, MD (wife Shivani Khanna). Dick will be remembered dearly for his winning smile, gentle humor, hard working attitude, and his faith in church, family, and friends.
He will be entombed at Memorial Park Cemetery in Rock Island next to his wife. Visitation to be from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 am on Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rock Island.
