Obituary

Richard "Rick" L. Whitcomb, 72, of Rock Island, died Thursday, January 5, 2023 surrounded by family at home.  A funeral service will be 9:30 am Monday, January 9, 2023 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island.  Visitation will be from 1-4 pm Sunday, January 8, 2023 at the funeral home.  Burial will take place at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented.  Memorials may be made in care of the Wounded Warrior Project or to the family.

Rick was born in Rock Island, Illinois on July 5, 1950, a son of Frederick and Jeanne Hart Whitcomb.  He was a U.S. Army veteran and served during Vietnam from 1969-1970.  He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star.

Rick married Lois Fay Williams on February 25, 1971 in Rock Island.  She preceded him in death on September 26, 2001.  He married Amy Yodts on August 8, 2008 in Rock Island.

Rick worked as a bridge operator for Rock Island Integrated Services on Arsenal Island for 29 years.  He previously worked 15 years at the Rock Island Farmall Plant.

Rick enjoyed hunting, bowling, fishing, playing pool, riding his motorcycle and playing video poker and roulette at Suzi's Video Poker and Slots.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Amy Whitcomb, Rock Island; children, Denise (Hector) Vasquez, Bettendorf, Kyler Yodts and Abbigail Yodts, both of Rock Island; grandchildren, Corey Hultgren and Noah Vasquez; great-grandson, Ez Hultgren; siblings, Denny (Jean) Whitcomb, Jimmy (Regina) Whitcomb, Rock Island, Jeff (Connie) Whitcomb, Rock Island, Pam Hammond, Rock Island, Roxanne Carns, Milan, Karen (Ken Straman) Whitcomb, Rock Island, Shelley (Rob) Williams, Rock Island and Brenda Whitcomb, Rock Island; father-in-law, Drexel Franks, Rock Island; brother-in-law, Matt (Jackie) Franks, Rock Island; and sister-in-law, Sarah (Steve) Rockwell, Moline.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Lois, sons, Cory and Michael Whitcomb, grandson, Chandler Furne, brother, Danny Jo Whitcomb; mother-in-law, MaryEllen Franks, brothers-in-law, Gary Hammond and Jeep Carns and his best friend, Dave Wilson.
