Rita Louise Coyne, 84, of Moline, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2026, surrounded by her family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 am on Friday, July 31, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island, IL. Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Thursday, July 30, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island, with a rosary to be recited at 3:00 pm. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made in care of Sacred Heart Food Pantry, Rock Island or the Sierra Club.

Rita was born on January 19, 1942, in Rock Island, IL, to Leo E. and Beulah V. (Danielson) Coyne. She married Patrick Logan on October 8, 1976 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rock Island. Rita attended undergraduate school at Rosary College in Chicago, Illinois and Marycrest College in Davenport, IA and then went on to receive her masters degree at John Carroll University in Cleveland, OH. She educated many, spending the bulk of her profession teaching English. Rita started her teaching career at John Adams High School in Cleveland, OH and then went on to teach at Emporia College in Emporia, KS, St. Ambrose University, Augustana College, and Blackhawk College. 

Rita had a passion for politics as a lifelong democrat and was a strong advocate for social justice and the environment. She also led the fight to bring the ward system back to Rock Island so all districts of the city were fairly represented and then went on to serve as an alderwoman for the Fifth Ward on the Rock Island City Council.

Rita loved to read, write, travel, spend time in nature, take a dip in a pool, garden, bake, Jazzercize, dance, attend the symphony, and above all else spend time with her family. She was also a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Quad Cities.

Those left to cherish Rita's memory include her husband, Patrick Logan; children, Michael (Christine) Coyne-Logan, Daniel (Jenn O'Hare) Coyne-Logan, and Nora (Tim) Loss; grandchildren, Delaney, Murphy, Jonathon, and Emmy; sister-in-law, Kathleen Logan; and brothers-in-law, James and Tom Logan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Carolyn Weeks; and brothers-in-law, Fr. Jerry, William, and Timothy Logan.
