Robert "Bob" Eugene Akin, 89, of Rock Island, passed away Wednesday February 4, 2015 at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.
Services will be 11:00am Monday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island. Visitation will be from 1:00-4:00pm Sunday at the funeral Home. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be left to the Arcadia Unit at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.
Robert was born on March 15, 1925 in Corydon, IA, the son of George and Bernice (Higgs) Akin. He married Jeanette Gerber on July 6, 1952 in Eureka, IL.
Mr. Akin had been employed with Army Weapons Command, Rock Island Arsenal as a equipment specialist, retiring in 1987.
Robert was a United States Navy Veteran having served during World War II. Bob was able to go on the Honor Flight in 2010 with his granddaughter, Brooke.
He was a member of Moline American Legion Post 246, Trio Masonic Lodge No. 57.
Robert loved watching the St. Louis Cardinals, his grandchildren's sporting events and playing softball, playing in two world series softball games. He enjoyed bowling, fishing and gardening.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years Jeanette; daughter, Diane (John) Kinser, Rock Island; son, Doug (Cheryl) Akin, Taylor Ridge; grandchildren, Brooke (Derrick) Hendrickx, Rob Akin, Kari (Tyler) Anderson, Stephen Kinser, Sonja Kinser; great grandchildren, Zach and Josh Hendrickx and Kai Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ralph, Edger, Lewis, Harold and Kenneth.
