Robert J. Amidon, 93, of Milan, died Friday, October 27, 2023 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.  A funeral service will be 11 am Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 201 E. 4th Avenue, Milan.  Visitation will be from 10-11 am Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at the funeral home.  Burial will take place at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented.  Memorials may be made in care of the Alzheimer's Association or to a charity of your choice.

Robert was born in Rock Island, Illinois on November 24, 1929, a son of Herbert Willis and Isabella Wilhelmina Cullison Amidon.  Robert earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois and his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.  He married Gertrude Petty on June 7, 1953 at the Taylor Ridge United Methodist Church.

Robert was a U.S Navy veteran who received the National Defense Medal and the Navy Occupational Medal.

Robert worked as a systems analyst for the Rock Island Arsenal and retired in 1985.  Following retirement, Robert taught at St. Ambrose University.

Robert enjoyed woodworking and tinkering with many things.  He would make birdhouses and several other items from wood to give to his family.  He also enjoyed gardening and enjoyed having a cigar while mowing his grass.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Gertrude Amidon, Milan; sons, Jeff (Elaine) Amidon and Bruce Amidon, both of Rock Island; granddaughters, Christina (Jerry) Cunningham and Alayna Rae Amidon; great-grandchildren, Liam and Marek Cunningham; sister, Harriette Westbrook, Ankeny, Iowa; and brother, Richard Amidon, Edgington, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Marion Hoffiditz.
