Robert Sweeney, 93, of Alpha, Illinois, passed away Friday November 5, 2021 at St. Mary's Hospital, Galesburg.

A memorial mass will be held 10:30am, Thursday at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Coal Valley. Mask and social distancing are required for attendees.  Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family. Inurnment will be at a later date in Greenview Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be left to St. Maria Goretti Church.

Robert was born on August 31, 1928 in Davenport, Iowa, the son of William D. and Ethel J. (Walker) Sweeney. Mr. Sweeney was a World War II United Sates Navy Veteran. He married Linda Diane Brooks on July 23, 1984 in Muscatine, Iowa.

Mr. Sweeney had been employed as a tool and die maker with J & J Specialties and later Reynolds Manufacturing.

He was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his children, William (Cynthia) Sweeney, Elizabeth (Donald) Dorton, Robert (Shannon) Sweeney II; grandchildren, Kory Sweeney, Lauren Sweeney, Michael (Maja) Dorton, Stephanie Dorton, Joseph Dorton, Sara (Jared) Degeeter, Thomas (Cassidy) Dorton, Bailey Ross and Maliek Sylla; great grandchildren, Zoey, Deaken and Levi; brother, William (Donna) Sweeney; sister in law, Betty Sweeney and brother in law, David Hunn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Diane Sweeney; his parents, William and Ethel Sweeney; sisters, Dorothy (Paul) Schloemer, MaryLou (Jim) Smith and brother, Jack Sweeney.
