Robert Lee Thompson, 89, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly Moline, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at Boyson Heights Senior Living Community in Cedar Rapids.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 27, 2026, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Avenue, Rock Island, Illinois. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Inurnment will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to ImpactLife blood centers in Robert’s memory.
Robert was born on November 6, 1936, in Moline, Illinois, a son of Floyd and Lillian (Claerhout) Thompson. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1962. Robert married the love of his life, Myrna D. Johnston, on December 23, 1960. She preceded him in death on October 1, 2022.
Robert worked as a clerk at the Rock Island Post Office for 35 years before retiring. He was a long-time member of South Park Presbyterian Church in Rock Island. He also volunteered for the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center. He was a proud member of a barbershop quartet, where he shared his love of music and camaraderie. A skilled craftsman, he found great joy in working with wood – carving, shaping and creating furniture and pieces that will be cherished for years to come. He was also an avid sports fan, especially when it came to college basketball, and remained a devoted supporter of the Chicago Cubs and Bears for most of his life. Robert was a devoted father, grandfather, and friend.
Those left to cherish Robert’s memory include his children, Julie (Rob) Turnis and Steve (Jessica) Thompson; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Sarah (Elliott) Fridono and their children, Shealyn, Natalie, and Carson, Hailee Thompson and her children, Jontez, Kaleeah, and Kamilah, Kelsey Turnis, and Bryce, Madeline, and Gabriel Thompson.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his daughter, Kathleen Thompson; and his sister, Elaine Ihrig.
