Obituary

Roy E. McGuire, 89 of Rock Island, died Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.

Funeral services are 10:30 am Thursday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island.  Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island, where military honors will be presented by Moline American Legion Post 246.  Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the Father Edward J. Bader Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will have a service at 6:30 pm.  Memorials may be made to the Rock Island Police Benevolent Association.

Roy was born Nov. 24, 1926 in East Moline, a son of Roy E. and Rose Hinsberger McGuire.  He married Jacquelyn Porter on May 30, 1953 in Rock Island.

He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1945.  Roy joined the US Army and was a WW II veteran.  He then worked two years at the International Harvester Corp. Farmall plant before enlisting in the US Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Roy attended Augustana College and graduated from Black Hawk College with an AA degree.  He also graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's National Academy in 1969 at the White House in Washington D.C.

Roy joined the Rock Island Police Department on April 1, 1952, serving as a Sergeant, Lieutenant, acting Chief of Police and retired as Chief of Detectives on Nov. 28, 1977.  He later served as a supervisor with the Street Department.

He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, Moline American Legion Post 246, Rock Island VFW Post 1303, FBI National Academy Association – Illinois Chapter, Illinois Police Association Division 6, Allouez Council 658 Knights of Columbus, the Father Edward J. Bader Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Travelers Protective Association of America and Rock Island Family Campers.

Survivors include his wife, Jacquelyn; daughters, Chris (Dan) Malone, Cleveland, Ill., Mary Kay McGuire (Ronald Foutch), Rock Island; sons, Michael "Mickey" McGuire, Moline, Patrick (Karen) McGuire, Geneseo, Mark McGuire, East Moline, and Matthew McGuire, Rock Island; son-in-law, Lionel McCallister, Rapids City; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren;  and his sister, Betty Thomas, Orion.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Debra J. McCallister; sisters, Mary Ann Kite and Donna Howell; and brothers, Jerald "Jerry" McGuire and Michael Kenneth McGuire.
