July 9, 1930 – March 18, 2018
Russell L. Hartwick, 87, formerly of Andalusia, passed away on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at St. Anthony's Continuing Care in Rock Island, surrounded by his loving family.
In accordance with his wishes, his body and organs were donated for medical research. A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 28th, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan, with visitation from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. prior to services. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association- Greater Iowa Chapter.
Russell was born on July 9, 1930, a son of Everett and Hattie (Dagner) Hartwick, in rural Lucan, Minnesota. At age 18, he became a teacher in a rural, one room school house for grades 1 – 8. After teaching for four years, he enlisted in the Air Force as a communications specialist which included 13 months stationed in Thule Air Force Base in Thule, Greenland, during the Korean War.
After serving his country for 4 years, Russell attended the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, where he received his degree in accounting. While there, he worked at a division of General Motors where he helped make missile guidance systems. It was there he met LaRayne Crandall, who later became his wife of 59 years. After working a few years for Wisconsin and the Federal governments, he started his own accounting firm and retired after 34 years as a Certified Public Accountant.
Russell is survived by his wife, LaRayne; sons, Jeff (Betty) Hartwick and Bob (Emily) Hartwick, eleven grandchildren, Brad, Sara, Olivia, Kyle, Tristan, James, Lauren, Abigail, Seth, Lillian and Teresa; and one great granddaughter, Maddison.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother and sister-in-law, LaVerne and Barbara Hartwick.
