Ruth M. Motz, 86, of Rock Island, died Friday, May 23, 2014 at Friendship Manor Silver Cross Pavilion, Rock Island. Services will be at 11 am Monday, June 2, 2014, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island. Visitation will be an hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made in care of the ARC of the Quad Cities.

Ruth was born in Sioux City, Iowa, on August 31, 1927, the daughter of Charles H. and Ella May Sloan. She graduated from the University of Northern Iowa, formerly known as Iowa State Teachers College, in 1949. Upon graduating, Ruth taught 4 years of high school in several different communities.

Ruth married Richard Motz on November 9, 1952 in Sioux City, Iowa. Together they enjoyed traveling the world. They even spent three years in Guam due to Richard's service in the U.S Navy. Besides traveling, Ruth enjoyed volunteering her time at the ARC of the Quad Cities and Eugene Field Elementary School. She also enjoyed growing African Violets and cross stitching.

Ruth was a member of Two Rivers United Methodist Church, Rock Island, the Order of Eastern Star and PEO Chapter LC.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Motz, Rock Island; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Steve Horrell; grandchildren, Daniel and Katie Horrell; and great-grandchildren, Bentley and Hensley Horrell, all of Highland, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Steven Motz.
