Samuel M. Gilman, 96, of Bettendorf, formerly of Rock Island, died Friday, January 27, 2017. Funeral services will be 11 am on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017, at Congregation Beth Israel at the Tri-City Jewish Center, 2715 30th St., Rock Island, where visitation will be from 10 am until service time. Burial to follow, at Tri-City Jewish Cemetery, Davenport. Luncheon afterwards at the Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities, 2715 30th St., Rock Island, IL 61201 or charity of your choice. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island is assisting the family. Born December 24, 1920, to Louis and Becky Gilman, Jewish Ukrainian (Russian) immigrants. Survived by his wife, Linda Gilman (Israel); son, Louis D. Gilman, Chicago; and daughter, Andrea Gilman, Silvis. Nephews, Larry Stillman (Lorraine), Tucson, AZ, and Michael Stillman (Marilyn), Milwaukee, WI; with niece, Stephanie Merritt (Phil), of his deceased sister, Ruth and brother-in-law, Edward Stillman. Also, preceded in death by his parents. Graduate of Davenport High School (Central), attended Augustana College then graduate of University of Chicago (1942). Served during WWII in the US Army. Upon discharge, completed Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School. Partner of 60 years with Coyle, Gilman and Stengel Attorneys at Law, deeply invested in community, philanthropic, charitable and commercial activities. President Emeritus of the Doris and Victor Day Foundation, and president/founder of the Rauch Family Foundations I & II. Formerly, Chairman of the Board of Franciscan Hospital (Unity Point), and Franciscan Foundation. Co-founder of WQAD and WQPT. Director of Bank of Silvis/Pinnacle Banc Group. An active Zionist, supporter of Holocaust remembrance, co-founder of the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities. Past director of the Tri-City Jewish Center and treasurer of Rock Island Community Chest. Co-founder of the Holocaust Remembrance Committee and lifelong member. Long standing friend/mentor and campaign supporter of Lane Evans, and Democratic party enthusiast. Sam was an amazing man, adoring father/husband and friend.
