Obituary

Sandra Jane Hass, 85, formerly of Rock Island, IL and most recently a resident of The Fountains in Bettendorf, IA, passed away on March 8, 2026. Sandra (“Sandy”) recently celebrated her 85th birthday surrounded by her loving family.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at Heritage Wesleyan Church in Rock Island. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Avenue, Rock Island. Additional visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Youth Hope, the Crisis Pregnancy Center, or a favorite charity.

Sandy was born February 18, 1941, in Kingstree, South Carolina, the daughter of the late Glen and Jane Perkins. She later moved to Rock Island, where she grew up and graduated from Rock Island High School. She went on to graduate from Augustana College and devoted her professional career to helping children as a speech therapist in the Rock Island and East Moline School Districts.

Sandy married Arthur John Hass Jr. on June 15, 1963, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Rock Island. Together they built a life centered on family, faith, and community. John preceded her in death on March 25, 2018.

Faith was an important part of Sandy’s life. Sandy was one of the original members of Heritage Wesleyan Church and remained active in many church groups and ministries throughout the years. Her faith led her to join a mission trip to Africa, which was an especially meaningful experience for her.

Sandy dedicated much of her life to her family, friends and serving her community. She volunteered extensively and held leadership roles in numerous local organizations and non-profits. Sandy was a past President of the Franciscan Medical Center Auxiliary and the Tri-City Garden Club. Sandy was active with Visiting Nurses of Rock Island, the Junior Board of Rock Island—where she served as past President and Mardi Gras Chair—Easterseals, Bethany Home, Steak Club, the Quad City Symphony, Martin Luther King Center Advisory Board, Crisis Pregnancy Center, and the Rock Island Beautification Commission.

Sandy found joy in cooking, painting and many other creative activities, but reserved her greatest passion for designing and tending to her bountiful flower gardens. Her knowledge was extensive and well used as her award-winning gardens expanded and grew more beautiful each year.

Sandy cherished time spent with family and friends, and nothing brought her greater joy than her children and grandchildren. During her daughter’s illness Sandy quietly committed herself to helping shoulder Elizabth’s burdens as much as possible. The passing of Elizabeth in 2015 left a lasting void in her life, but Sandy continued to live with strength and grace while remaining especially close to Elizabeth’s children. After her husband passed, Sandy treasured time traveling with her sons and their families.

She is survived by her sons, John Hass (Mary Frances Budig) and Greg Hass (Dr. Melinda Hass); her sisters, Jody High and Jean Buchanan; her brother, Glen Perkins (Teresa Perkins); and her grandchildren, William Carius, Caleb Carius (Mryn Carius), Anna Carius, Alexander Hass, and Georgia Hass. She was preceded in death by her parents, Glen and Jane Perkins; her husband, Arthur John Hass Jr.; her daughter, Elizabeth Ann Carius; and her brothers-in-law, Richard Buchanan and Richard High.

Sandra will be remembered for her deep faith, her commitment to serving others, and the love she shared with her family and friends. The family would like to thank the staff at The Fountains who cared for her each day and a special friend Kay Christiansen that checked on her weekly for years.
