Sandra J. Young, 78, of Milan, IL, passed away Saturday October 24, 2015 at St. Anthony's Nursing and Rehabilitation, Rock Island.
Graveside services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Mausoleum Chapel at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. There will be no visitation, Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 - 7th Ave., Rock Island is assisting the family. Memorials may be made to to the family to be designated later.
Sandra was born July 8, 1937 in Rock Island, a daughter of Leland and Catherine Knittle Johnson. She married James "Junior" Young on October 3, 1958 in Rock Island. He preceded her in death in 1981.
Sandra was a pharmacy tech with Revco in the former Eagles Store in Milan. In earlier years she had worked at the former Servus Rubber.
In her younger years, Sandra was an avid athlete. At the time, she was a the youngest player on the women's softball league at the age of 14, and was an excellent tennis player. She received numerous awards and acknowledgements for both. She later served as president of the Babe Ruth Auxiliary and Babe Ruth Leagues. Sandra also was instrumental in helping to secure the first National Senior Babe Ruth Tournament in Milan. She bowled in and served as Vice President of the Milan Outcasts Bowling League.
Over the years, she was active in PTA , area Booster Clubs, and had run for Harvest Ball Queen and also for Village Trustee of Milan. Sandra was honored by Modern Woodmen for outstanding leadership in the community.
Suriving are her sons, James Young, and his wife Cindy, of Bettendorf, and Scott Young, Rock Island; grandchildren, Shannon Myers and Jessica Young; great-grandchildren, Skyler, Lylah, Amere and Paris; brothers and sisters-in-law, James (Connie) Johnson, Gallatin, TN and Lee (Pat) Johnson, Colona; and nieces and nephew, Kris Johnson, Kim Sullivan, Tim Johnson, and Laura Terronez; and many friends.
Sandra was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and special friend, Dean Willson.
