Sara Elizabeth Box, 79, of Davenport, passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at Genesis West Medical Center, Davenport.
Funeral Service will be 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at First Baptist Church, 1401 Perry Street, Davenport. Visitation will be 4 PM to 7 PM on Friday, June 19, 2015 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan. Burial will be at Farlow Grove Cemetery, Matherville, IL. Memorials may be made to the family.
Sara was born at her home on April 29, 1936 in Cable, IL, the daughter of Arthur and Hazel (Tomlinson) McMeekan. She married Carl Box on November 28, 1957 in Cable, IL. Sara got her Masters Degree in Elementary Special Reading. She worked as a teacher in the East Moline School System and Great Falls, Montana School System. Sara also worked as a special reading teacher in Great Falls, Montana before her retirement in 1987. After her retirement, she built and ran the Whistle Stop Takeout Deli in East Glacier Park, Montana, where she enjoyed cooking and meeting new people.
Sara and Carl traveled Europe while they were living in Germany for Carl's military service. They also traveled with their two four legged traveling companions Duffy and TBear in their travel trailer through forty-nine out of the fifty states, and planned on making a trip up to Alaska.
While growing up in Cable, Sara was a member of Cable Community Church. When they moved to Great Falls, Montana in 1961, they became members of First Baptist Church. While in Great Falls, she started and coordinated Prison Fellowship Ministry Angel Tree. Sara and Carl moved back to Iowa and lived in Dubuque where they were members of First Baptist Church, Dubuque, and are now currently members of First Baptist Church in Davenport.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Carl Box; brother, Richard (Ramona) McMeekan; four nieces, Teresa (John) Wyant, Carolynn (Bill) Gombert, Elizabeth (Cory) Bollinger, Rebecca (Brian) Heick; twelve grandnieces and grandnephews; and one great grandniece. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Sara's family would like to send a special thank you to the Oncology Hospice nursing staff at Genesis West Medical Center, Davenport, for their loving care and help they gave during Sara's stay at their facility.
