Sarah Jane Hofsas Brodd, 77, of Rock Island, died Friday, June 12, 2015 at Silver Cross Nursing Center, Rock Island.
A memorial service will be 10:30 am Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, Rock Island. Inurnment will be in the Andover Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 7 pm Tuesday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, Rock Island, the Alzheimer's Association, or to the Citizens to Preserve Black Hawk Park Foundation.
Sarah Jane Hofsas was born Oct. 6, 1937 in Decatur, Ill., a daughter of Percy and Loretta Robertson Hofsas. She married Jon Landin Brodd on June 30, 1962 in Urbana, Ill. He died on June 23, 1995.
Sarah received her bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois in 1959. She was a Fullbright Scholar studying at the University of Munster in Germany from 1959 - 1960. She also received a master's degree from the University of Illinois, as well as a second master's degree from Marycrest University. Sarah had been a Professor at Black Hawk College, Moline, having taught math and computer science. In earlier years she taught math and German at Rock Island High School.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church, Rock Island, where she sang in the church choir and was a member of WELCA. Sarah was also a member of the League of Women Voters, Black Hawk College Retirees and charter member of the Citizens to Preserve Black Hawk Park Foundation.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Brodd and Charles Dix, Rock Island; sons and daughters-in-law, Anders and Beth Brodd, Moline, and Philip and Sarah Brodd, Des Plaines, Ill.; grandchildren, Katherine Dix, Karl Dix, Ethan Brodd, Ellen Brodd, Jackson Brodd, and Zoey Brodd; and her sister, Elizabeth "Libby" Hofsas, Rock Island. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, John Frederick Hofsas.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Arcadia Unit at Heartland Health Care Center, Heartland Hospice and Silver Cross Nursing Center for the loving and compassionate care given to Sarah during her illness.
