Obituary

Seneca D. Gray, 47, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away Monday, May 26, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Beyond the Baseline, 1540 W. 12th Street, Davenport, Iowa, 52804.

Seneca was born March 13, 1978, in Moline, Illinois, to Mary Marie Gray and Alvin Veasey. He was the oldest of five children.

Seneca graduated from Rock Island High School in 1996. After graduation, Seneca began working at UPS, where he worked for 14 years until his chronic health condition no longer allowed him to do so. Seneca kept himself busy raising his two sons, Sencere and Sentrell, which he was selflessly devoted to. "My boys are my main priority." He then began to assistant coach his first basketball team, The QC Patriots, in doing so he realized that the knowledge and guidance he was pouring into his sons, he could share with other young boys and at that point he was all in. Seneca was the assistant coach for the QC Patriots for three years. After the QC Patriots, he coached Team Quick, Baseline Bandits, and Da Future, all at Beyond the Baseline. Seneca considered each of the kids, coaches, and parents from these teams as his family and each had a spot in his heart. It gave Seneca pleasure to be able to give back. Whether it was lending his time to Hoopin' for Change, helping with a skills camp, or giving a kid a ride to or from practice, anything he could help with he would. He continued to give even after his passing by being an organ donor so that he may help someone else in need.

Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Monica Dunbar; sons, Sencere Gray and Sentrell Gray; one grandson, Senai Gray; mother, Mary Marie Gray; sisters, Mia Gray, Shannon Gray, and Keiona Gray; two brothers, Alvin Veasey Jr. (Erica) and Jamis Gray; grandmother, Luether Gray; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Seneca was preceded in death by his daughter, Serenity Danielle Gray; father, Alvin Veasey; grandparents, Demsey Miller, and Willie and Sara Veasey; uncles, Ralph Gray and Ike Greer; aunt, Suzie B. Gray; cousins, Luther Gray Jr., Willis Gray, Demar Bester, and Vontai Gray; and honorary parents, Larry and Lisa Dunbar.
