Sherman M. Powell III, 79, of Rock Island, passed away Friday, November 20, 2020 at Heartland Memory Care, Moline. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, a Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at a later date. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the River Bend Food Bank.

Sherman was born on June 27, 1941 in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Sherman and Lorraine (Brunson) Powell. He married Sherry Clancy on January 1, 1995 in Rock Island. Sherm was a Rock Island County Deputy Sheriff and retired after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Masonic Lodge. Sherm enjoyed farming with his family in his younger years. He also enjoyed antiquing, auctions, repairing things, and woodworking. Sherm loved the years spent with his wife and their extended family in Florida. He was a great storyteller and had a unique sense of humor. Sherm loved sitting on the front porch with all the neighbor children and they enjoyed him. He loved being "Uncle Grandpa Sherm" to his great nephew, Brody.

Those left to cherish Sherman's memory include his wife, Sherry; daughters, Melissa (Gregg) Phillips and Ashley Powell; grandchildren, Danielle (Justin) Reynolds, Brandon Morrison, and Hailey Davis; five great grandchildren; siblings, Louis (Sandy) Powell. Harold (Donna) Powell, Joette Heymann, Marge (Gary) Oakland, Debbie (Don) Bowen, and Diane Martin; sister-in-law, Sherry Powell; numerous nieces and nephews; and special dog, Carlie.

Sherman was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ronnie Powell; and brother, Rick Powell.
