Shirley Berdine Guyton, 91, of Sherrard, IL, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. Born on April 12, 1934, in Barnes City, IA, she was the beloved youngest daughter of Gilbert and Pauline (Dunton) Smith.
Shirley graduated from Barnes City High School, where she loved to play basketball and softball, and went on to serve in the United States Women Army Corp. Shirley studied and served as a dental assistant for 2 years. Being a veteran was a great source of pride for Shirley.
After her military service, Shirley married the love of her life, O.P. "Pete" Guyton, on December 11, 1954. Together they had four children, then went on to help raise two additional generations of grandchildren who brought her immense joy.
A kind, gentle and loving mother and grandmother, and a devoted member of the United Community Church, Matherville, IL, Shirley's faith was her cornerstone, guiding her in her life and relationships. She cherished the fellowship she found within the church. Shirley also loved to cook for her family and taught many children and grandchildren recipes that they will always treasure.
Her Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Monday, January 19, 2026, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Milan. A Celebration of Life will begin at 9:30 am on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at the funeral home. Burial will follow immediately at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to United Community Church, Matherville, IL.
She will be greatly missed by her children, Derek (Ann) Guyton, Scott Guyton, Brenda (Kenny) Moreland, and Phillip Guyton. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Erica, Michael, Tomika, Jonathan, Meghan, Chellie, Deanna, Dallas, and Jessi; great-grandchildren, Mary, Brenna, Bryce, Harper, Hope, Sunny, and Reagan; great-great-grandchildren, Tattum, Carmello, Abel and Ellie.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, her parents, her brother and sister-in-law, Lowell (Rosie) Smith, and sister, Katherine McIntosh.
