IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Shirley J.
Humes
June 7, 1933 – December 27, 2015
Shirley J. Humes, 82, of Moline, formerly of Rock Island, loving mother, wife, and friend, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 27, 2015.
Services are 10 a.m., Wednesday, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island, with a Christian wake service at 4 p.m. Private burial services will be Wednesday at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island.
Shirley was born June 7, 1933, in Sampsel, Missouri, the fourth child of Albert and Edith (Lucas) McCreary. On August 29, 1953, she married Donald R. Humes, the love of her life, and the couple spent the rest of their lives devoted to their children, family, and business. They had five children, who they raised and nurtured with seemingly inexhaustible love. In 1969, Don, a pharmacist, bought a small drug store, McHugh's, on 14th Avenue in Rock Island. Shirley and Don worked side-by-side and for endless hours expanding the store and turning it into a successful gift shop. During their years at the store, they made wonderful friends and memories. In 1996, with Don's health deteriorating, the couple retired and moved into a newly built house, a place Shirley loved and referred to as her little home in the woods.
Shirley was a member of St. Pius X Church, where she served as a greeter and an Eucharistic minister. She was an auxiliary volunteer at Trinity Hospital, and a past member of the Junior Board Visiting Nurse Association.
Shirley's hobbies included decorating, reading, and gardening. But her true passion was for the countless people she loved, including friends, neighbors, and fellow parishioners. Her joy, in her words, included her "children, grandchildren, and her little dog, Luke."
Survivors include her children, Teri Muehlbauer (Ken), Cindy Beckman, Dave (Sally), Jim (Joe), and Tim (Kerry); and her grandchildren, Karen, Kate, Sarah, Mike, Maggie, Charlie, Hannah, and Haley. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don; her sister, Vivian Bonderer; her brother, Robert McCreary; and an infant sister.
Shirley will be remembered for her smile, kindness, joy, sense of humor, and friendship. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church or to the American Heart Association.
